As an actor, he started playing insignificant roles until he landed the role of Brandon Walsh in the 1985 film The Goonies. Surprisingly, he and Johnny Depp were the finalists to play the role of Tom Hanson in the popular TV series 21 Jump Street. Though he did not get the part, he found something significant — a friendship with Depp.

Now, he is more notable for being one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — Thanos. However, before securing the role, he had credits in various box office hits, including Men in Black 3, True Grit (2010), and American Gangster.
