Iconic On-Screen Blunders Everyone Should Know About
In Hollywood, only the best of the best can get the most prestigious work credits. This means that all the top-notch films and TV series we get to see are the works of the best actors, the best directors, the best screenwriters, and the best editors. Unfortunately, even the best can make some pretty epic mistakes. Just take a look at some of these on-screen blunders that will forever remain on the internet.
GAME OF THRONES
If you’re a fan of the fantasy drama series Game of Thrones, then you would know just how meticulous the showrunners of the show are when it comes to the plot and details on the set. On the flip side, one small yet crucial mistake escaped everyone’s notice and made its way to the final cut. We’re talking about the epic coffee cup that appeared on one of the episodes. We have to give credit to the eagle-eyed GoT fans, though, for quickly spotting the blunder and posting it on the web. It sure made the internet a little bit more exciting.
THE MATRIX
Did you think a movie as brilliant as The Matrix would not have any goofs? Think again! If you look closely at this close-up doorknob shot of Neo, you would see that the camera used to film the scene made a little cameo appearance dressed up in a black leather jacket. It might be embarrassing for the crew who handled the editing, but it sure did make some of us laugh hysterically. Let’s hope the man behind the camera got some much-deserved recognition in the film credits.
JURASSIC PARK
Jurassic Park may have been the most advanced special effects film of its time, but one split-second mistake made it eligible to be included on our list. In the scene where a raptor barges into an empty kitchen, you would see that a human hand suddenly appears and gently pets the back of the dinosaur. It’s pretty easy to miss, but if you spot it, you surely cannot ignore it. It doesn’t matter that much, though. The movie still left some degree of impact on the film industry.
DOWNTON ABBEY
Next up, we have the BBC period drama titled Downton Abbey. The show’s plot takes place in 1920s England and generally has pretty accurate set details. One teeny tiny mistake escaped their notice, though, when they forgot to edit a plastic bottle out of their promotional material. As you know, plastic bottles did not exist until 1973, so seeing one in a supposedly vintage setting sent the entire internet into a frenzy. Who knows, maybe there were even credit cards during the 1920s.
JAWS
Jaws may be a pop culture favorite, but it sure is not a cinematic masterpiece. Look closely at this shot, and you’ll know what we mean. As you can see, the scene shows a herd of boats setting out to catch some sharks in the open waters. One of those boats just happens to be occupied by the camera crew. Why hire extras when you can use your own camera personnel, right? We just hope they gave them enough credit for the cameo appearance.
AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR
In the age of digital manipulation and cutting-edge special effects, almost nothing is impossible to alter. That is unless the post-production team forgets the instructions altogether. Such was the case with Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War. The team completely forgot to supersize Mantis’ eyes and unknowingly sent it out for the whole world to see. Though the scene in question only appeared in a split second, it still did not escape the laser-sharp focus of Marvel fans.
FRIENDS
Character stand-ins are usually not shown on camera for the reason that they are not the main actors. Usually, they are only called in during a shoot so that other actors could have a reference person to look at or talk to without having the main person on set. In the case of Friends, however, Courtney Cox’s stand-in kept on appearing in the shot that it eventually confused fans. Hey, at least the stand-ins got some credit.
THE BIG BANG THEORY
In the hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory, there is a famous elevator that never served its purpose. During the series’ first season, the characters explained that the elevator has not been working for two years. Eventually, fans analyzed a plot change in season three. The disconnect happened when the characters explained that the elevator seized to work after it exploded from jet fuel damage seven years before the story started. It’s such a big plothole, and the writers deserve all the credit for it.
PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN: CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL
It’s quite clear that producers spend a lot of investment money on films like Pirates of the Caribbean, so it’s only appropriate that they expect a perfect outcome. Unfortunately, though, their expectations weren’t quite met when a shot of Jack Sparrow revealed a seemingly misplaced extra in the background. As you can see, the person in question is sporting a clean white t-shirt paired with a light-colored cowboy hat while standing amongst ragged-looking pirates in the middle of the sea. Who knows, maybe he was hitching his way to the wild wild west.
